Media AS Your Production Report: Part two

During the production of my double page spread, I used extensive background research to get a good grip, sense of style and similar codes & conventions used within the fashion magazine genres. I also researched and looked through how other successful magazines like Vogue, TeenVogue and Seventeen produced their double page spreads.

The TeenVogue magazine was conventional using bright and striking colours like yellow, pink and baby blue which helped to anchor the younger type of audience. However Vogue used more dominant house style colours to represent an older primary target audience. Colours like red, white and black have been used to connote a more serious and bold statement about the type of audience targeted in the magazine. My magazine has followed this convention as I have used a variety of colours to make the page look more interesting and appealing to the target audience. My peers stated that the colours I used were complimentary as they helped to bring out the playful, girly side of the magazine through the use of the pink colour, as well as the serious, sophisticated side through the use of the colour black and white.

My magazine has also followed the convention of using white space to make a focus on the main images on the page. My photographs taken during a two hour photo shoot in a lighting studio were the key to my page. There is a lot of links between the images and the text which makes it appear to be a visual magazine which is why I have used little text. The images are all significant to the text and because the images are bold and clear, it attracts the reader attention because it’s conventional for a fashion magazine to use images similar to the ones I have used. I believe that the images were one of the main strengths within my double page spread.

Through my readership research Vogue magazine has one of the highest viewed figures. This has been done through how they have iconized fashion as an important culture to their specified target market through the media, the way the public socializes and to those who inspire us. Vogue immerses itself in fashion, always leading readers to what will happen next’. To do this they have kept an update of the new fashion and what is new to come, almost like giving their audience a starter to the new fashion that other may not know about. By doing this it retains the customers and persuades them to keep coming back to buy the Vogue magazine. This inspired me because the picture I took all include the new trend styles and fashion which inspirational celebrities may be wearing. The majority of my target audience wear midi skirts, crop tops and maxi skirts and are influenced by celebrity led fashion trends.

In my magazine there are a variety of pictures which are all the same size except for one. The main image is in direct mode address to make the reader feel as if the information provided within the article is based on their personal identity which could encourage the readers to buy the magazine. The use of this body language and facial expressions the image could give off an enigma to the audience stating that by having this type of look you can feel more confident and mature and have the superior, classy sophisticated look.

The title of my double page spread ‘Dream Style Dream Design’ uses alliteration which is a persuasive technique to intrigue the reader to continue to read on and figure out the message behind the play on words within the title. This then links with the sub-heading of the title which I have used to anchor the style of the article and the text. This is done by how each letter from the words ‘mix & match’ have a different colour. This shows continuity with the article layout and design.

The pull quote in my magazine has been used as part of the interview in an informal mode to make the target readers feel more comfortable. It is conventional for the magazine to use pull quotes which can be mostly controversial or carry the main message of narrative. The Drop Cap is the starting point of the magazine. This gives a clear guidance where the reader begins to read.

As my magazine is aimed at two types of audiences I consolidated the typography within the article. In my DPS I have used two different types of typography. The first type is a sophisticated, formal text which is known as sans serif font. This font has been used in the main title which is aimed at the young adults because they can afford to have their dream style and dream design. The second type of font used is the serif font which is colourful, bold and creative.

I started off with the idea of the page numbers in the middle of the page, however through my research I realised it was conventional for the page numbers to be at the bottom corner of the page. When I asked my peers the majority of them preferred it at the bottom corner as it was clear and separated from the text and images in the article. I took the idea of using a high heeled boots as part of the page numbers. High heels are iconic in the fashion genre and by using them in my magazine it allows the reader to recognise the link it has to the magazine genre (iconography).

It is also conventional for the institution name of the magazine to appear on the magazine. I have placed it on the side of the magazine with the title of the category of the article. By doing this it allows the reader to know what category the article is in. By adapting the magazine name it shows a sense of continuity of the design from the front cover but with a slight change for the article to familiarise the reader with the image of the magazine.

I’m pleased with my finished product. I made several changes during the construction process based on feedback from my peers and teacher. I feel I have met the brief and produced an attractive media package.

Media AS Your Production Report: Part One

This report is in response to the production company ‘Splash’ requesting a new magazine to be brought to the market. The new magazine is called Basis; it is a fashion magazine for women 16-25. I came to this decision by carrying out primary research in the form of a questionnaire to find out what magazine genre my audience (females16-25). The majority of them preferred the fashion magazine as it was more interesting than the other genres. A  Focus groups of girls 16-25 proved to be interested in fashion and this helped me to decide to this target audience for my magazine. The social group I will target is the B-C2 group of the socio-economic group. This covers management and a potential audience with expendably cash.

In the last few years magazine sales have been in decline. Current sales of magazines are decreasing year by year. There are many reasons, however the main reason behind the issue is the upgrade of technology (subscribing a magazine on smartphones rather than buying is store). Another reason magazines are in decline is because of the tough economic climate since 2008.

My magazine will be multi-platform to resolve the issue of electronic sales. Through my secondary research I found out that the recent twitter follower figures for Vogue are 3,193,957. This shows that Vogue is a popular magazine and my magazine has the potential to make it in the market. The uses and gratification theory suggest that personal identity is a strong reason why people choose media with Vogue, there is definitely a strong sense of brand, personal identity and reflection of values. This is what Basis wants to create.

At an early stage of my research I decided to analyse 3 magazines within the same genre of the magazine I wanted to produce. I started off by analysing the Front cover pages of TeenVogue, Glamour and Seventeen. The colours used in TeenVogue magazine are hot pink, white and purple which are colours that are relatable to females and are eye catching. Feminine colours are also shown in the magazine Seventeen which includes pink and yellow. Pink is the number 1 iconic colour for girls as it is a sign of femininity, softness and youth. This makes it clear because the colour signifies who the target audience is. However in the Glamour magazine, colours like blue, black and white are portrayed to be more cool and sophisticated. This primary research helped me decide what type of colours I have to use in my magazine to suit the target audience.

The masthead in Glamour and TeenVogue has bold writing which could have been done to identify the target audience because of the way the typography style is informal, anchoring that the magazine is aimed at younger generation of teenagers. This is done by the use of sans serif font. The main images on the front cover on all 3 magazines include direct mode of address. This creates a relationship with the magazine reader making it seem as if the articles in the magazine are directed personally to the reader. Each cover picture also uses what Laura Mulvey called the male gaze; this is an image of a woman that would appeal to a man, this may well be a controversial issue but is also clearly a convention. The layout of the 3 magazines I analysed all include rule of 3 both vertically and horizontally. However in the Seventeen magazines the subheadings at the bottom of the page collide in the centre 3rd and the TeenVogue magazine does the same thing so overall this could be a key feature to include when I produce my magazine. In the Seventeen magazines a barcode is used on the bottom left hand corner.

My secondary research was based on analysing the contents pages of 3 different fashion magazines. The 3 magazines I analysed were Glamour, Vogue and TeenVogue. In the Glamour magazine there is no clarity of the reader knowing that the page is a contents page because there is not title. However in Vogue they have used their magazine institutions name in bold across the top of the page and small print of the contents above so that the magazine shows continuity. They could have done this as it also gives the reader a simple layout that it’s a contents page as they have used the half page layout break. This is where on one page, one half of the page includes page numbers and article titles and the other half has a body shot image of a model. This is done in the Glamour Magazine. However in the Vogue and TeenVogue magazine the writing is around the picture.

The Mise-en-scene in the background of the contents has been presented to connote purity of the women and her power and presence by the way she is posed. In Glamour the model is winking which could help to portray a quirky personality. However in Vogue the facial expressions are more serious and confident which is bringing out the model’s personality through the clothing. On the other hand the Vibe contents page the models body language is sexy as well as the facial expressions. The silver clothing could anchor the demographics of the target audience to be a sophisticated middle class or aspiring middle class audience.
